Prix de Rome - Ground for dialogue
The assignment of the Prix the Rome has always been a reflection of its current era. One hundred years ago, the participants were asked by the jury to design a new building for the Dutch Royal Institute of Science and Fine Arts. This edition the participants are challenged to reflect upon and rearticulate the method they (should) apply to undo the ecocidal legacies of capitalism, colonialism, and imperialism. We would deny the complex nature of these challenges if architects alone would be able to tackle these questions. We believe that such reflections should be done in dialogue. Accordingly, in order to undo these legacies, we emphasize the importance to unlearn: to position yourself in a vulnerable manner, to recognize prejudices and preconceptions within the discipline, and to endeavor the role of the listening ear.
